These Vertical Oyster Garden strings were prepared in partnership with the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center using tested materials and approved methods designed to support safe oyster recruitment and healthy shoreline habitat.
Prepare the Oyster Shells
Sanitized oyster shells were used as the substrate. The shells were naturally cured in the sun for approximately six months rather than treated with bleach, making them safe and effective for oyster recruitment. Each shell was drilled through the center before assembly.
Use Approved Coconut Coir String
An approved coconut fiber string (coir) was selected and woven six to seven times for strength and durability. This material has been specifically tested for use in vertical oyster gardens.
Stack the Shells Correctly
A knot is tied at the bottom of the string, then approximately 18 to 20 oyster shells are stacked one at a time. Each shell is placed with the inner cup facing downward and the rough outer surface facing upward to encourage oyster spat attachment.
Attach the String to the Dock
Secure the completed oyster string to your dock using a stainless steel eye screw or similar marine-grade hardware.
Position at the Proper Height
The oyster string should hang freely in the water column and must not touch the bottom. The top shell should remain submerged even at the lowest tide.
Let the Habitat Develop Naturally
Over time, oysters settle on the shells and begin filtering water while creating habitat for small fish, shrimp, and crabs.
