Every Shoreline Can Make a Difference
No shoreline is perfect, and perfection is not the goal.
Restoration is about understanding what your shoreline needs and making thoughtful improvements over time. It does not always mean returning a shoreline to exactly what it looked like in the past. Instead, restoration uses science, historical information, and an understanding of how Florida’s coastal ecosystems function to determine what will provide the greatest long-term benefit.
Every shoreline is different. For one property, restoration may mean repairing an eroding bank. For another, it may involve planting native grasses to reduce stormwater runoff or replacing invasive plants with native species. Whether the improvements are large or small, every restored shoreline contributes to cleaner water, healthier estuaries, thriving seagrass, stronger fisheries, more wildlife habitat, and a more resilient coastline.
Repairing Damaged Areas
Some shorelines have been significantly damaged by storms, erosion, development, pollution, invasive plants, or the loss of native vegetation.
A shoreline that once supported healthy mangroves may be left with exposed soil, little wildlife habitat, and banks that continue to erode. Restoration helps rebuild these natural systems by stabilizing the soil, slowing stormwater runoff, reducing erosion, and reestablishing native vegetation. Over time, these areas begin functioning more like healthy coastal ecosystems again.
Restoring Native Ecosystems
Restoration also means bringing back the native plants and natural processes that have shaped Florida’s coastline for thousands of years.
Scientists have spent decades studying Florida’s coastal ecosystems through historical records, aerial photography, geology, soils, plant communities, and long-term ecological research. This research helps identify which native plants naturally belong in different coastal environments and how they have adapted to tides, storms, saltwater, flooding, sandy soils, and changing sea levels.
Mangroves, native grasses, shrubs, oysters, seagrasses, fish, birds, and countless other species evolved together as one interconnected ecosystem, with each playing an important role.
Mangroves stabilize shorelines and provide nursery habitat for young fish. Native grasses slow stormwater runoff, absorb nutrients, and hold soil in place with deep root systems. Oyster reefs filter water while reducing wave energy. Seagrass meadows produce oxygen, improve water quality, stabilize the bay bottom, and provide food and shelter for hundreds of marine species.
When we restore native plants to appropriate locations, we are doing more than adding landscaping. We are helping restore the natural relationships between plants, wildlife, soil, and water that allow Florida’s coastal ecosystems to function.
Enhancing What Already Exists
Not every shoreline is severely damaged. Many shorelines are already functioning well but can become healthier and more resilient through thoughtful improvements. Adding native plants, reducing stormwater runoff, improving wildlife habitat, or replacing invasive species can strengthen a shoreline while preserving the healthy features already in place.
Restoration is not always about starting over. Often, it is about building upon what nature has already given us.
Removing Invasive Plants Thoughtfully
Removing invasive plants is often an important part of restoration because they can spread aggressively, crowd out native vegetation, reduce biodiversity, and provide far less ecological value for Florida’s wildlife.
However, successful restoration is about more than simply removing invasive plants. Even an invasive tree or shrub may be helping stabilize the shoreline by holding soil in place with its roots. Removing large amounts of vegetation all at once can leave exposed soil vulnerable to erosion from rain, waves, tides, boat wakes, and storms.
That’s why restoration should always include a plan for what comes next. Native plants should be installed as invasive plants are removed so new root systems can begin stabilizing the shoreline. On larger properties, it is often better to remove invasive vegetation in phases rather than clearing an entire shoreline at once. This staged approach allows existing vegetation to continue protecting the shoreline while newly planted native species become established.
The goal is not simply to remove invasive plants. The goal is to replace them with native species that provide greater long-term benefits for wildlife, water quality, and shoreline resilience.
