Description
On the Bocilla Islands, muhly grass is a natural fit. This Florida native evolved in sandy coastal soils where rainfall moves quickly through the ground and protecting water quality is essential. Muhly grass helps slow surface runoff, allowing rainwater to soak into the soil instead of washing sediment into surrounding bays and canals.
Below the surface, its fine root system helps hold sand in place, reducing erosion from wind and heavy rain. Above ground, muhly grass provides shelter for insects, nesting material for birds, and habitat for small wildlife such as lizards and pollinators that support the broader island food web.
Because it is adapted to local conditions, muhly grass requires little water once established and does not need fertilizers or chemicals to thrive. This makes it a water friendly choice that supports cleaner water and healthier ecosystems throughout the Bocilla Islands and Charlotte Harbor.
